Dean Rostohar – Shinken kata vol 4 – Knife and Baton

From New Products from Budo Shop Store by New Products from Budo Shop Store

Dean taught unarmed defence against knife and baton. He also taught how to use the knife, and how to use the baton. He also taught many good taijutsu techniques in a very realistic manner. This is a very good video if you are interested in realistic self-defence and fighting from the Bujinkan system. We also recommend this video to anyone working or interested in security work as a guard or police. Although some of the techniques is not allowed to use in police force/work you can still see how it could be used against you if the opponent is good. With Dean Shihans experience from real fighting in war, and also from his time in the police force in Croatia he certainly know what he is doing. For his full resume, check out his web site... Dean Rostohar – Shinken kata vol 5 – Tactical Knife Combat

From New Products from Budo Shop Store by New Products from Budo Shop Store

On the 10/11. December 2005. a seminar with the theme "Tactical Knife Combat" was hold within the organization of Specwog, in Zagreb. The seminar was led by Specwog Chief Instructor Dean Rostohar where he taught his Tactical Technical Combat System. The knife is a weapon that we can encounter every day and it's one of the most dangerous weapons, especially in the hands of an expert. The knife is also one of the basic weapons and tools of elite Special forces, and is an obligatory part of training.Knife fighting is, by it's nature, dirty, dangerous and deadly. In order to know how to defend from a knife, it is neccesary to know how the knife functions and how to fight with it. Unfortunately, with increasing crime rate, the number of victims of knife attack has also increased, what we can see every day in the media. However, the knife is also a great self-defence mean in the situations of ultimate neccessity. There is no efficient defence against the knife, if you don't understand this weapon. This seminar was dedicated to combat tactics with a knife. Through various combat technics and drills with a knife, the students was learned tactics of fighting with a knife. The combat technic drills are very important in tactics of knife fighting because the drills teach us how to manipulate the knife, how to properly move, properly use our body and knife in exercises without a partner. Drills also teach us how to react properly, and to train and learn our movements and reflexes in exercises with a partner, so that it would be useful in possible combat. All aspects of fighting with or against the knife, technics with standard and reverse knife grip, basic cuts and stabs, the ways of carrying and drawing the knife, tactical movement, tactical grabbing of the attackers weapon, taking attackers attack into a trap, the technics of immobilizing with a knife, tactical reflex drills, entering and dynamic attack with the body, the principle defence=attack; attack=defence, tactical disarming with the knife, using body with knife technics, etc. was shown and trained on the seminar. In order for someone to know how to use the knife as a mean of self-defence, he has to know how to combine the technics with a proper psycho-physical attitude.

Fix Universal

From Kabutoshimen by Toryu

I must recommend this for cleaning swords, I think it is called “Fix Universal” and the website is universalfix.com.

I had a nasty spot on my iaito for years, from a chestnut I cut. I didn’t clean it properly so it was this for 10 years or so. The iaito is aluminium so it never rusted, anyway the stain looked worse and worse. It came of really easy with this fix.

It is also supposed to be very good for polishing away rust from metal. I don’t have anything rusty to clean, so I can not testify this myself. But I do believe it could work if you have a sword that got rusty and stained.…

才能魂器 sainou tamashi utsuwa

From Kabutoshimen by Toryu

This years theme is taijutsu with the feeling of rope, and also a little sword. It is still early to tell how the year will continue, I was there the first two weeks and it will of course change. It is stupid to think you can get the whole thing in just two weeks. As soke so often says, “nothing is decided.” We should go along with what is given by the gods or spirits, not steal techniques or take something that is not given. If you train slowly and correct you should be able to sense what uke is giving you, if you go to fast your ego is directing you and you will not be able to see and use what is given to you.

Enlightenment can be found in three places. Under your feet, up in the space (heaven), and written on your eyelids. It is as simple as that. In our case that study Bujinkan it is as simple as Soke says. Go to japan and train with him, and train with those that do to keep yourself on the right path. So simple!

To become a master you need three things. Ability (what you are born with), soul (how much you put into the training), and openness (being open enough to take in all that is taught). There is also other words that can explain the kanji in other words, maybe even different. Look them up in a dictionary and read what others already explained on blogs and forums.

I wrote this in January already and just discovered it waiting to be posted. Sorry, but better late than never.…

The new Honbu dojo

From Kabutoshimen by Toryu

Today was the first training with soke in honbu dojo. He opened speaking about a new honbu dojo that hopefully can be started on in 3-4 years. The current honbu will stand here for five more years, then the city will build the railway where it stands now.

Soke asked us to spread the word that it is ok to send in donations for the new honbu dojo. I would suggest that each dojo-cho will collect money and donate it in the name of respective dojo.…

Bujinkan.ME News #39 (New Year, new DVD at Budo Shop)

From Kabutoshimen by Toryu

Akemashite Omedetou Gozaimasu!
(Happy new year!)

This year is Heisei 21 and 牛年 ushi-doshi, the year of the buffalo, cow or ox in the zodiac calendar and the element of earth. Buddha invited the animals to participate in a race. The prize was a coveted position on the Chinese Zodiac calendar. The first 12 animals to cross the river would appear on the Chinese Zodiac calendar in the order in which they completed the race …. the rat used his brain rather than his brawn. It hitched a ride on what it perceived was the mightiest swimmer. Just before the buffalo reached the shore, the rat jumped off the buffalo’s back and crossed the finish line before the buffalo, putting the rat in first place, and the buffalo the second place, followed by the tiger…

The cow is is also associated with the deity 虛空藏菩薩 Kōkūzō Bosatsu (Ākāśagarbha in Sanskrit). Kokuzo (also written Kokuuzou, Kokuuzoo) symbolizes the “vast and boundless” Buddha wisdom that permeates the universe. Believers pray to Kokuzo to grant them wisdom on their quest toward enlightenment. People also pray to Kokuzo to improve their memory, technical skills, and artistic talents, for Kokuzo is revered not only as the deity of wisdom, but as a protector of craftspeople and artisans.

About this years Bujinkan theme… I don’t know so much other than what has been stated on websites (here, here, here and here), apparently there is no particular theme for techniques concerned (the philosophy you can read on the links above). However I heard there will be more sword as this is a thing we in general need to practice more, sword is also my favourite weapon :-) .

I will be off to Japan tomorrow, and will probably make a few blog posts on my web site… http://kesshi.com about the trainings and stuff.
